Thanksgiving, a time for thanks and giving, occurs during the month of the Pig — perfect for Pig, the gourmand of the Chinese zodiac. Ever notice how people “pig out” on the abundant Thanksgiving feast? All the character traits of a Pig are ideal for this holiday; natural kindness, a good heart, desire for everyone to win, and happy to be the peacemaker. But Pig can be naive at times. This innocence is endearing to Pig’s best friends diplomatic Hare and artistic Sheep, and to Pig’s soul mate the mighty Tiger. But such pure-hearted innocence is not always lucky for the Pig!

I was born on a Wood Pig day, so have Pig in my Four Pillars chart. When people ask, “What is the one thing people don’t know about you?” it’s that I am a slow foods chef. I shop at the farmer’s markets and cook everything from scratch. And I entertain with food. That’s an expression of the Pig in me. And I do have that Pig naivete, at times, of idealistically seeing the best in others, not their feet of clay.
The wisdom of the ancient Chinese Taoist philosopher Lau Tzu (6th century BC) is contained in a slim book of 81 short chapters know as the Tao te Ching. Tao could be translated as “the way”and ching means “book” in Chinese, making the Tao te Ching a book of the Tao. And Tao is the way of all nature. The 49th chapter of the Tao te Ching reminds me of the positive qualities of the Pig:
The Master has no mind of her own.
She works with the mind of the people.
She is good to people who are good.
She is also good to people who aren’t good.
This is true goodness.
She trusts people who are trustworthy.
She also trusts people who are untrustworthy.
This is true trust.
The Master’s mind is like space.
People don’t understand her.
They look to her and wait.
She treats them like her own children.
