Western astrology is structured on solar cycles. Asian astrology is structured on lunar cycles. By following both natural systems, the yang solar calendar and the yin lunar calendar, we can flow with the eternal cycles of nature.

MAJOR SOLAR HOLIDAYS
The Western solar year starts with zero degrees Aries at Spring Equinox. Each of the 12 astrology signs cover 30 degrees. All 12 signs times 30 degrees = the 360 degree circle of the zodiac. The 4 major calendar points of the solar year are:
SPRING EQUINOX (Vernal Equinox) Equal day and equal night.
The Sun enters cardinal Fire sign Aries. Occurs on March 20 or 21.
SUMMER SOLSTICE The longest day in the northern hemisphere.
The Sun enters cardinal Water sign Cancer. Occurs on June 20 or 21.
AUTUMN EQUINOX Again, equal day and equal night. The Sun enters cardinal Air sign Libra. Occurs on September 21 or 22.
WINTER SOLSTICE The longest night in the northern hemisphere. The Sun enters cardinal Earth sign Capricorn. Occurs on December 21 or 22.
All four elements Fire, Water, Air, and Earth are highlighted at 4 solar points. These solar dates are close to the 20th or 21st of March, June, September, and December.
MINOR SOLAR HOLIDAYS
Four minor solar holidays mark the midpoints between Equinoxes and Solstices.
CANDLEMAS (Imbolc) on February 2 marks the midpoint between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. Animals awaken after winter hibernation, hence Groundhog Day for augury from the movement of animals.
LAMMAS on August 2, also called Lughnasad, marks the point between Summer Solstice and Autumn Equinox. Lammas or Loaf Mass is a harvest festival for Mother Goddesses and grain God Lugh.
HALLOWEEN on October 31 marks the solar point between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice. Halloween is the most popular pagan holiday, and celebrated as the Celtic festival of Samhain. It’s the eve of Hallomas on November 1. Mexican Día de los Muertos and Catholic All Souls’ Day are on November 2.
In many traditions it’s time to celebrate the life of those who died this year, ancestors, and the Crone aspect of the Goddess. This is the 3rd and final harvest festival after Lammas and Autumn Equinox.

YOUR SUN SIGN
A place to start understanding Western astrology is to know your Sun sign. “What’s your sign?” means what’s your Sun sign. Your Sun sign is part of the zodiac (“wheel of the animals” in Greek) that begins with Aries at Spring Equinox. You can determine your Sun sign if you know your birthday. (For example, I was born on March 15 while the Sun was in the sign of Pisces.) Your birth chart is far more complex than just your Sun sign. But read below about your Sun sign’s basic traits.
