August 21 2017 is a new Moon and a total solar eclipse. This eclipse occurs when the Moon slides between the Earth and the Sun. Starting over the Pacific ocean, the Moon will paint a 67-mile wide swath of darkness across the United States. This lunar sweep starts at 9:06 am PDT in Oregon, and ends at 4:06 pm EDT in South Carolina. Then the eclipse continues over the Atlantic ocean for about 75 minutes.
To observe, on the West coast the eclipse begins just after 9 am, and the eclipse peak is at 10:19 am. On the East coast, the eclipse begins just after 1 pm, and the peak is around 2:30 pm. If traveling to view the eclipse, allow more time for traffic because Mercury is still retrograde until September 5.
In Jungian terms, an eclipse is an absence of light when the shadow is seen. So this eclipse is a time to expose and bring to light what is hidden. This new Moon is in Fire sign Leo, the second Leo new Moon in a row, bringing another opportunity to express talent, vision, and originality. We can dig deeper under the influence of the eclipse to find resources and express ingenuity.
The Moon, Sun, and Mars are all in Leo, with many fortunate Fire trines that bring success. The Moon and Sun trine Uranus in Aries for new discoveries about yourself and others, with increased perception and understanding.
Mars trines Saturn in Sagittarius for courage and confidence. Mars’ initiative blends with Saturn’s structure that’s good for working on projects that were started earlier.
Mercury in Virgo is opposite Neptune in Pisces that can be confusing if too much information becomes overwhelming. No need to make rapid decisions.
DOUBLE PHOENIX
This new Moon eclipse begins the month of the Earth Phoenix (Rooster) in Chinese astrology. 2017 is the year of the Fire Phoenix, making this a double Phoenix month. The next new Moon on September 19 starts the second Earth Phoenix month, making two double Phoenix lunar months in a row. Time to cultivate Phoenix traits of hard work, conscientiousness, and discipline.
The Earth Phoenix is the blessed golden Phoenix. Earth cycles are good to focus on practical endeavors including health, and can be excellent for business. Luck is strongest for those born in Phoenix, Snake, Ox, and Dragon years and Fire signs Leo, Sagittarius, and Aries.
