The lunar month of the Snake in 2025 began on the new Moon Sunday April 27 at 12:31 Pacific time, and lasts until the next new Moon on Monday May 26 at 8:02 pm Pacific time. But 2025 is a leap lunar year. So next month will be a Snake lunar month too, from May 26 until June 25!
A lunar leap year occurs every few years to bring the lunar calendar into line with the solar observations. Chinese custom is that the fourth lunar month repeated, after the lunar months of the Tiger, Rabbit, and Dragon. (Chinese lunar New Year begins on the 1st day of the new Moon of Tiger lunar month, when the Sun and Moon are both in Aquarius.)
In the Western calendar, there will be two new Moons in Virgo on August 22 and on September 21 to make up for this lunar leap year. So two Snake lunar months this year!
